Shedding the critic mantle for local faves

A FRIEND REMINDED me this weekend that I used to be a music fan before I became a critic. Fair enough. It does change how you listen to music.

So let me shed my judgmental cloak and speak to you as a music fan. There’s a young performer coming to town tomorrow who I think you should hear. Her name is Erin Condo and she lived here for a time before she went off — as they used to say in fairy tales — to seek her fortune in Austin, Texas.

While in school here, Erin heard and fell for the music of a band called Cheap Truckers’ Speed. You may have missed the altcountry threesome’s tenure here, and yes, you did miss something. Brian Porterfield, who fronted the band and now leads the Love Me Knots, was Erin’s inspiration. When he’s in top form, you won’t find a better writer. Erin realized she wanted to be a singer-songwriter more than whatever it was she was in school to become. But she stuck with both — took lessons from local guitarist Billy Matheny, started playing open mics and honing her writing skills, and stayed in school. Billy told me at her last Morgantown show that she was far better than she had any right to be so soon in her education. It wasn’t sour grapes. It was pure admiration.

Recently, Erin released her first CD, aptly named “Leaving Songs” since it was released shortly after she left here for Texas. It’s as fine an album as I’ve heard from a newcomer in a bunch of years. And despite the bounty of musical veterans backing her, it’s Erin’s voice and songs that carry the disk.

She’s not on CMT yet, but give her some time. It is, after all, her first effort — and she’s already getting airplay on Americana stations around the country, and without benefit of a major label or allegations of payola. Erin plays Friday at the Rosewood Theatre (www.rosewoodtheatre.com), opening for The Nighthawks, and Saturday at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas. For the latter show, she’ll be joined by her old (he’s pushing 21) guitar teacher.

She’s a pure Americana hometown gal, rocking a tank top with her old, faithful blue jeans—hair down, shades on—because that sun’s entirely too bright for the hangover she’s suffering.

She’s lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Guatemala, but it was in West Virginia where Erin Condo paved her way to discovery in 2002, playing open mics in Morgantown and State College, PA. Now living in Austin, TX, she just released her solo debut, “Leaving Songs.”

The album title and CD art (The track list is on a postcard addressed to Another Lover in Temporary Town, USA) serves as a nice indication of what’s in store.

Stories of recurring lost love—”It’s nothin’ new, but it hurts just the same.” That universal theme of dead end relationships—”Quick to love, slow to go.”

Songs like these go great with hard whiskey, but they’re not all sad and slow. She picks it up a bit with songs like “Primer-Colored Car,” an autobiographical piece about busting out of a small town, and “Gas Well” is about chicks knocking off a liquor store…kickass!

It’s traditional saloon-style country; sorrow expressed with twin fiddles, a hawaiian steel guitar, a harmonica and a piano—All driven by a voice that is strong in its subtlety and familiarity. She’s a talented songwriter and storyteller.

I recommend Leaving Songs for boozers and fans of traditional country.

Erin Condo – Leaving Songs
